On today’s Tech Help for Churches, Twitter: Why only 140 characters and how do I tweet shorter [tweet “Twitter started on the sms platform, so each tweet had to be smaller than that.”]Sometimes people wonder why tweets are so short. Part of it is that twitter started as a text-message only platform. They reserved 20 characters from the 160 character limit and so there were only 140 left.
So how do you make the most of those? Tweet the most important piece of information. Swap “and” for “&”. Remove extra spaces. Try text speak such as “b” instead of “be” or “l8tr” instead of “later”. Also, try looking for shorter synonyms.
Whatever you do, don’t use a twitter lengthener. They’re really annoying. It’s better to tweet a link to a blog post.
