YouTube Encoding Settings | Tech Help for Churches

On today’s Tech Help for Churches, YouTube Encoding Settings

Video can be pretty confusing. What’s a codec, what’s a wrapper? What’s the difference between bit rates and sample rates? What type of sound should you use.

Thankfully, YouTube has given us a list of things to try to get the best video here

It’s a lot of information, so let me break down the highlights.

Your editor might output avi, wmv, or mov, but what YouTube prefers is mp4. Within that, you want to use the h.264 codec.

Can you do stereo? What about 5.1? Yes and yep.

What about frame rate? Are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 acceptable? Yes, all of them.

Does youtube like progressive video? Yes, but not interlaced.

What about different resolutions? Everything from 120-4k (and everything in between).

The preferred bit rates for video are 2.5 mbps for 480p, 5 mbps for 720p, and 1080p needs to be 8 mbps (all assuming 30 fps or less and all other settings above).

Finally, if your video is 4:3 or 16:9, that’s okay, but don’t put letterboxed bars on a video or you’ll get both letterboxed and pillar boxed video. No one wants that. 😉

Watch the video above for more details and to transcode to these settings consider MPEG Streamclip. To learn how to use it, take a look at this tutorial.
